The best Father in law and Grandad

Created by Elsa (Elizabeth) 5 years ago
I first met Andy's mum and dad in 2005 when they came to visit Andy in Ethiopia. Andy told me that they have been in China and they were a bit shocked with the poverty there, so I pleaded with him that they should never come to Ethiopia as they may find it even more shocking. But both Maureen and Bernard proved me wrong, they were both down to earth and willing to try all the traditional food and customs -although it is very different from theirs. Bernard (I prefer calling him Grandad –as he is the best one) even tried the most controversial traditional food without Maureen knowledge! Although he loves his English tea very much, he took extra miles for exploring Ethiopian coffee and enjoyed drinking it with me and Andy’s company. I feel very fortunate to share the past 14 years of my life with him as he was the wisest, kindest and most considerate person. Oh, I shouldn’t forget to mention that he is also my English history teacher and training me to become a ‘crafty King’J I say considerate because he genuinely was interested in the progress I made to mix into the UK system and comforts me by acknowledging the hardship of leaving your family, friends and your life behind. I am very grateful to Bernard and Maureen for making me feel at home, your love and care helped me to love your country and culture. Bernard was also a very gentle and a loving grandad to my children. He played football, helped to make crafts for Helina’s school homework, read them many stories and of course, never held back his generosity whenever he gets a chance.
I will miss my English father so much but his memories and the wisdom he shared with me stay forever; I will make sure you will be a big part of my children's memories too. You were always there for me, Andy, Helina and Nathan –as you always say ‘all you need to do is pick up the phone’ :-) As I was your ‘favourite daughter in law’, you are my favourite father in law. May you rest in peace –grandad.
